Bring the Zest back in Sex, even during Menopause

Menopause is a phase which brings with it numerous discomfiting signs for women, not the least bit of these is a decreased sex drive. This is caused by physiological changes which are particular to the phase, such as changes in vaginal conditions which can make intercourse uncomfortable or even painful. One of the treatments for the indications of menopause is Hormone Replacement Therapy, but this can bring such serious side effects that most women choose to bear with menopause instead of dealing with it. It doesn’t have to be this way; if you are suffering the frustrating symptoms of menopause, there are alternative ways in which you bring the zest back into your sex life. The following are a few of them.

The pleasure which is obtained form sex is decreased in menopause due to the changes in the vaginal tissues; they tend to lose their elasticity, and they become dry and thin. The sensitivity of the clitoris suffers as well. As a result, intercourse may be painful to most women, and becomes an activity they’d rather do without. A series of exercises created by Dr. Arnold Kegel for strengthening the inner and lower abdominal muscles can also have an added benefit of enhancing sexual sensitivity and vaginal tissue elasticity. Kegel exercises are recommended to be performed at least five times a day in order to achieve ideal results.

Herbal supplements are also a viable alternative to HRT, if the menopausal symptoms are not severe. Black Cohosh is a potent herb which can keep estrogen in the body within normal levels; the physiological indications of a hormonal balance are consequently reduced. Chasteberry is also an herb which can provide the same benefits, for the same purpose of hormonal equilibrium. Zalestra, a natural supplement containing Black Cohosh, as well as Green Tea extract and other nutrients which help in mitigating the symptoms of menopause, are also a potent alternative. Those who plan to take on the mentioned herbs and supplements are advised to initially consult with a doctor though, as they may have contraindicative reactions with other medications. Black Cohosh is not advised for long-term use, and Chasteberry may inhibit the effectiveness of birth control pills.

The combined symptoms of menopause all contribute to the waning interest in sex for women; these indications include a substantial reduction in the levels of estrogen and progesterone, an erratic sleep pattern which results in deprivation, abrupt mood changes, anxiety and depression. Clinical research has shown that intake of vitamin E can be a substitute for the lost estrogen hormone in most women, aiding in alleviating them from hormonal imbalance, uncomfortable hot flashes, and even adverse vaginal changes. To achieve the desirable benefit from the vitamin, a daily intake of 400-1000 IU is recommended, preferably in equal doses spread four or five times for the entire day.

Menopause can be quite a dilemma for women, but they shouldn’t see it as an insurmountable obstacle in achieving an active and healthy sex life. Women entering the menopausal stage are advised to have a consultation with their doctor, in order to consider any options which are available for them.
